The Philippine Electronics Industry: a Consistent Export Leader (06/05)
Nowadays, electronics already account for more than 50 percent of total Philippine exports worldwide.
Nowhere is growth more consistent and significant than in electronics industry. Sales figures continue to soar higher each year manufacturers and exporters modify and diversify their product lines to meet the challenge of supplying the higher-end segment of the world market.
The sector traces its advent to a time when foreign firms from industrialized nations started to relocate their facilities to the country because of the low labor and production costs, attractive government investment incentives and presence of adept workers. Giant international electronics firms have been the initial beneficiaries of the country's favorable business climate. Similarly, the geographical location of the Philippines, being at the crossroads of international trade, and the establishment of export processing zones made investments even more attractive to them.
Production wise, the electronics sector has grown faster than any other industrial sectors. The growth in the sector is brought about by the merging of key technologies and markets (world multi-media); rising demand for existing products; introduction of new products and opening of new markets. The continuing boom in the production of micro-chips and telecommunication devices has likewise bolstered its sales trend.
